2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek First Drive

"The interior of the Crosstrek is nearly identical to that of Impreza, save a few minor differences: the instrument cluster, a plastic cargo tray, and privacy glass. This similarity is hardly surprising -- it's both easy and cost effective to use as much as you can from what you have on hand. You sit in, not on, the firm yet comfortable seats, which have just enough bolstering keep you in place. For such a relatively small vehicle, the Crosstrek has a surprising amount of room inside. I could easily sit behind myself with plenty of headroom. Being 6'2", that's not something I can say about every vehicle.

On the outside, Subaru has given the Crosstrek its own distinctive character and a much more dramatic look than the Impreza. It has unique black side and wheel arch cladding with cutaway ends that provide a cleaner look, and though the roof rails might look like any other, the Crosstrek's have one significant difference: At the end of each is a little "spoiler," a minor change that improves fuel economy by a full mpg. (Models fitted with a CVT get 25 mpg city/33 mpg highway/28 mpg combined, and those equipped with the manual get slightly less.)" [Read more from Motor Trend]

Subaru Prepares for Double-header Weekend in New England with Rally and Rallycross Events

"Subaru is preparing for a rally double-header this weekend as they send Subaru Rally Team USA (SRTUSA) to Maine to compete in the New England Forest Rally while Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team (SPRT) will head to nearby New Hampshire Motor Speedway for round four of the Global Rallycross Championship.  The logistical challenge alleviated slightly by the fact that the tandem events both take place in the team’s backyard. Subaru’s technical partner Vermont SportsCar headquartered in Colchester, Vermont manages both teams.

Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins, the defending Rally America Champion, aims to clinch the 2012 Rally America National Championship in Maine at New England Forest Rally.  Higgins has had a phenomenal season thus far earning two wins and two second place finishes from four rounds.  Higgins can secure the championship with a just a sixth place or better finish this weekend and still has the sixth and final round of the championship to run in September. Higgins won this event in 2003, but the route is vastly different this year meaning past experience will be less of a factor. The New England Forest Rally features nearly 100 miles of technical gravel forest roads that run along the Maine-New Hampshire border.  The event starts Friday July 13 at 9am and is headquartered at the popular Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine." Subaru's New BRZ Is the Speediest Seller in May

" In its first full month of sales in May, the all-new 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car leaped out of the gates as the fastest-selling vehicle in the United States. According to Edmunds.com, Subaru BRZ models stayed on dealer lots for an average of just four days last month, the quickest turnaround in the country.

On average industry-wide, new vehicles took 53 days to sell in May, but the new Subaru BRZ has been boosted by positive reviews and an affordable price aimed at younger buyers. As Subaru's first rear-wheel-drive car since the 1950s, the BRZ is slated for conservative production initially, a fact that has driven up demand even more.

"Subaru fans have been waiting for the BRZ to arrive for years, and we're seeing the result of that pent up demand with an incredibly quick sales pace," said Lonnie Poffenberger, Sales Manager of Gentile Subaru, a Racine, Wisconsin Subaru dealer. "The BRZ is a game-changer for the sports car segment; its lightweight design allows for accessible, engaging performance without a highly inflated price."

With a lightweight chassis and an all-new 200-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, the 2013 Subaru BRZ has an impressive power to weight ratio of 13.7 pounds per horsepower. Meanwhile, the choice of a standard six-speed transmission or an optional six-speed automatic with paddle shifters coupled with a limited-slip rear differential ensures that the vehicle's power is smoothly shifted to the ground.

The new Subaru BRZ may be affordable, coming in at well under $30,000, but that doesn't mean that it skimps on interior features. A standard touchscreen GPS navigation system features Bluetooth connectivity, while a tilting and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel will make finding a comfortable driving position easy in all BRZ models. Proving that the new Subaru is a sports car inside and out, the BRZ also comes with heavily bolstered front seats that will keep passengers in place through tight corners." [Read more]

Subaru's EyeSight Offers Accident Avoidance

"Most accident avoidance systems use a combination of optical and radar sensors to recognize cars and pedestrians, but Subaru's new EyeSight system is simpler: using two CCD cameras mounted on either side of the rearview mirror, the arrangement processes stereoscopic images and uses shape recognition software to perceive potential impact, applying brakes when necessary.

Our nighttime test drive through North Carolina's Outer Banks picked up on cyclists and drunk teenage pedestrians, with the system warning of their presence on the dashboard; though radar-based systems work over longer distances, EyeSight's 80 meter (262 foot) range served our purposes fine. And while some drivers might prefer to switch the accident detection system off if they enjoy aggressively approaching slow moving traffic, our 2013 Subaru Outback tester proved the system's effectiveness when it came to a screeching halt just short of a car mockup." Subaru BRZ Leads List of Fastest-Selling Cars

Subaru BRZ
"Subaru and Scion dealers are having no trouble finding homes for BRZ and FR-S models. The sport coupes are ranked one and two on the list of cars that spend the fewest days on dealer lots. According to Edmunds, the BRZ takes just four days to turn, followed by the FR-S at five days. On average, it takes dealers 53 days to move new models. Both machines are surrounded by a halo of buzz and plenty of pent-up demand. Subaru began selling the BRZ in the U.S. at the end of April, while Scion gave the first 86 FR-S buyers the chance to come to California for a little track time in their new purchases." [Read more]

Subaru Legacy that spent 3 months at bottom of Finnish lake starts on first try

subaru legacy wagon in lake
""Ja, that ice'll hold ya." Until it didn't, and suddenly a man's 1996 Legacy wagon was at the bottom of a shallow lake in Finland. Three months later, the Subaru wagon was dragged from its freshwater slumber, and while most people would just write the car off or at most turn it into a parts donor, curiosity got the better of the rescue squad.

Would it run? Just how bad was the damage? Before plunging below the surface, the owner did have time to shut the engine down and get his dogs out, so the boxer four didn't aspirate any water and electrons weren't coursing through the various circuits, two details that likely saved a bunch of damage. After removing a live fish from the engine bay, draining a lot of water from the fuel tank and crankcase, and a fresh fill of fluids and spark plugs, lo and behold, the SCUBA-ru chugged to life on the first try." The all-new Impreza continues to achieve triple-digit sales gains.  May Impreza sales are up more than 235 percent over May 2011; year-to-date sales represent a 170 percent gain over 2011.

Subaru To Increase Japanese Production

"At a time when the majority of Japanese automakers are moving production out of their domestic country, Subaru and its parents, Fuji Heavy Industries, are looking to do just the opposite.  The plan as of now is for Subaru to build 78 percent of its annual output inside Japan by the end of this fiscal year.  Last year, the automaker pumped out about 73 percent of its product domestically and it isn’t looking to revert.

“A large-scale expansion in the U.S., where we build new factory buildings and such, will cost a lot,” said Chief Financial Officer for Fuji Heavy Industries, Mitsuru Takahashi in an interview with Automotive News.  The reasoning behind the mainstream domestic production pulls by manufactures like Nissan, who plans to make the majority of their Infiniti line U.S. built, is due to the increasingly strong Yen.  For the big name makes, it has been getting more and more taxing to build a vehicle in Japan and then have it exported to its main market.  Given Toyota and Honda have a massive hold in the United States, it makes financial sense to increase production inside the bigger market.  Subaru on the other hand, is a bit different." Subaru Expands Its Business in United States: Increases Annual Production at its Indiana Plant

"As their plans for the Chinese market has been abandoned, Subaru now concentrates on its business in the United States, the brand’s biggest market. As per the newly implemented strategy, the company calls for increased output at its Indiana plant and targets to produce around 200,000 units by mid-2014. The automaker has also sraised its U.S. sales target to 380,000 vehicles a year by its 2016 fiscal year. Earlier, Subaru failed to win approval from Chinese authorities to set up a local joint venture with Chery Automobile Co and as a result the automaker had to shift their business from there.

“We will prioritize expanding production in America while we watch the situation in China and consider what to do there when there are some developments,” said Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. He said he still want to make vehicles in China, the world’s biggest auto market. But he no longer is counting on doing it by 2016. Earlier, a mid-term business plan was unveiled to sell 180,000 vehicles in China by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016. Subaru expected to build 150,000 of those in China. Now the company plans to sell only 100,000 by then — all imports. As the automaker wants to make up its deficit in its global sales goals in North America, its revised target boosts annual North American sales to 410,000 units by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016. At present, Subaru expects to sell 324,000 vehicles in the United States in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2013." [Read more]

10 Things Your Car Will Have By 2020

"The 1980s classic film, Back to the Future, depicts a future with flying cars and "skyways." The year: 2015. We don't have a time machine, but we can guarantee that in four years we'll still be using earthbound roads.

And we peered a little further into the future of automotive technology — to 2020, to be exact — to see what features are likely to be big sellers.

Safety will always be a top concern, and car companies will continue to develop technology to help reduce accidents. Government mandates to increase fuel economy and reduce pollution will lead to smaller, less thirsty vehicles, with a high percentage of electrified vehicles on the road. And you'll likely be able to tell your car to check your Facebook page." [Read more]

Subaru Impreza Gets Stop-Start

Subaru says the new range has generated a huge amount of interest. Photo / Supplied
"Subaru is claiming new-found fuel gains for its fourth-generation Impreza variants through stop-start engine technology, improved aerodynamics, and more efficient gearboxes.

It reckons on fuel savings of 22 per cent for the variants with continuously variable transmissions (CVT) and 20 per cent for those with six-speed manual gearboxes, both measured against the outgoing Impreza range.

In the real world, town-and-around fuel figures for the CVT-equipped cars pan out at a claimed 6.8 litres/100km (41mpg), while fuel useage for the manuals is said to be 7.1 litres/100km (39mpg).

The CVT is called Subaru Lineartronic Transmission in Subaru-speak. It replaces the four-speed automatic in the outgoing model. Paddle shifters on the top-spec Impreza simulate six stepped ratios.

Exhaust emissions have also been cut. Subaru claims the 2-litre Impreza with CVT produces 157 gr/km of CO2, 24 per cent ahead of the outgoing four-speeder. The manual 2-litre produces 164 gr/km - a 21 per cent improvement.

Both the petrol-powered all-wheel-drive sedan and hatchback introduce a new multi-function display, which provides the driver with information such as how much fuel was saved by the use of stop-start, which Subaru says can account for up to 30 per cent of a journey in busy traffic.

The display, controlled using the multi-function steering wheel, also offers information on the electronic stability control system, maintenance, faults, seatbelts, air-conditioning, airbags ... and so on.

The Impreza is available in four specifications, starting at $34,990: entry-level 2.0i; 2.0i-L; 2.0i-S; 2.0i-SL. The standard model gets 16-inch wheels, the others wear 17-inch alloys. The 2.0i also misses out on a reversing camera.

The top-end 2.0i-SL is the only Impreza variant with satellite navigation, leather seats, electric sunroof, power-adjustable driver's seat as standard." [Read more]

Subaru Road Race Team Eager for Round 2 of GRAND-AM Series

"Leveraging a two-month lull after the first event of the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series, the Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) travels to Birmingham, Al., after a productive period identifying and completing refinements on their #35 Subaru WRX STI 4-door race car in preparation for this highly-anticipated race.  This weekend’s event will be run on the popular, 2.3-mile Barber Motorsports Park circuit.

Andrew Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., and Bret Spaude, Bushnell, Fl., will share cockpit duties in the race-prepped, 2012 Subaru WRX STI developed specifically to compete in a field of road racing cars developing over 400 horsepower.

“Superior horsepower is always advantageous,” said Joe Aquilante, principal of Phoenix Performance in Phoenixville, Pa., where the SRRT Subaru race units are prepped and maintained, “but the Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive system in our WRX STI is a great benefit on a twisting, hilly track such as this one and negates the power of the V8-engined cars.  We led laps during last year’s race at Barber [Motorsports Park], and our competitive lap times in January at the race at Daytona [International Speedway] drive our confidence.” [Read more]

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek Gets New York Auto Show Reveal

"Subaru unveiled the XV Crosstrek in European trim at last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, and now the latest Subaru crossover will make its North American debut at next month’s New York Auto Show.

Based on the Impreza platform, the XV Crosstrek promises to blend versatility with fuel economy and comfort. All models will come with Subaru’s 2.0-liter boxer-four engine, which produces 148 horsepower while returning a Subaru-estimated 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway fuel economy (EPA estimates are still pending).

Like all Subarus except the upcoming BRZ coupe, the XV Crosstrek gets the automaker’s symmetical all-wheel-drive for sure-footed traction in any weather. The four-wheel independent suspension is raised compared to Impreza models, which should give the XV Crosstrek the ability to navigate fire roads as well as pavement.

The base gearbox is a five-speed manual with an included hill-holder feature, but a “Lineartronic” CVT is available for Crosstrek Premium and standard on Crosstrek Limited models. Unfortunately, a conventional automatic is not an available option, although the CVT does offer a manual mode with six simulated gears.

Inside, expect plenty of storage compartments and a generous amount of rear seat legroom, which Subaru says will rival some midsize cars. With rear seats folded, the Crosstrek XV will give owners a flat load surface with some 52 cubic feet of storage space. A standard cargo cover keeps valuables out of sight with the back seat in place.

The Crosstrek XV will come in Premium and Limited trim levels, with even Premium models getting a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; Bluetooth phone integration and audio streaming; power doors, locks and windows; security system; iPod control and USB/auxiliary in jacks." 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek® to Debut at New York International Auto Show

"Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it is expanding its line of award-winning crossover-type vehicles with the all-new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The versatile, fun-to-drive Subaru XV Crosstrek, which arrives this fall, combines bold five-door design with an expanded-capability chassis, high fuel economy and everyday comfort. The new Subaru XV Crosstrek will debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. '

Subaru based the new Subaru XV Crosstrek on the Impreza® platform, making significant changes to the chassis and body and configuring interior standard equipment and options specifically for this new model. All 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek models are powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter BOXER engine, teamed to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive via a five-speed manual transmission or available second-generation Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Although official the Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy figures are not yet available, Subaru projects the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek to be the most fuel-efficient all-wheel drive crossover on the market. Manufacturer-estimated fuel economy figures are 25 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 28 mpg combined. The 15.9-gallon fuel tank in the Subaru XV Crosstrek is 1.4 gallons greater than that in the Impreza models.

Built for Rugged Action or Everyday Driving

Compared to the Subaru Impreza five-door model it is based on, the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek incorporates numerous body and chassis enhancements for its expanded-capability mission. Black side- and wheel-arch cladding, rocker spoiler and roof rails provide a rugged contrast to the body color. The higher ride height, roof spoiler and unique-design 17-inch wheels bolster the Subaru XV Crosstrek model's go-anywhere stance and attitude. Front and rear bumpers and the front grille are unique to the Subaru XV Crosstrek, and dark-tint privacy glass is standard.

The rugged styling is backed up by function, as the four-wheel independent suspension features a raised configuration in the Subaru XV Crosstrek. The new crossover model's 8.7 inches of ground clearance is higher than for most other crossovers and even some dedicated SUVs. The Subaru XV Crosstrek uses standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/55 R17 all-season tires to provide all-weather traction and performance. The four-wheel disc brake system in the Subaru XV Crosstrek features larger front rotors than on the Impreza 2.5i models.

The standard five-speed manual transmission includes the Subaru Incline Start Assist feature, which will briefly hold the vehicle while the driver coordinates brake and clutch to pull away from a stop on a hill. Available for the Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium models and standard on the Limited trim line; the Subaru Lineartronic CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range. A six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters allows the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. With either transmission choice, a standard ECO gauge helps the driver to operate the vehicle as economically as possible." [Read more]

(FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, announced that it held a line-off ceremony at Subaru's Gunma Main Plant (Ota-city, Gunma Prefecture, Japan) with Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) President Akio Toyoda and honored guests in attendance, in commemoration of the production start of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86.

FHI and TMC first agreed on business collaboration in Oct. 2005. After the companies expanded their cooperative ties with new agreements related to development and production in April 2008, they then began four years of development. The completion of this joint-development product also marks a great achievement of the alliance between FHI and TMC.

At the ceremony, TMC President Akio Toyoda said, "I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the ceaseless efforts of all FHI people and staff who were involved in the development, production and preparations for both models. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 would not have been successfully developed without collaboration between FHI and TMC. We started the alliance for mutual growth in 2005 and now I'm delighted to see that our alliance surely bore fruit."

FHI President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, after extending his gratitude to all participants at the ceremony, said, "The car symbolizes our corporate strategy in two significant aspects: good progress of our alliances; and advancement of our 'select and focus' approach. The start of production today made a huge step for us, but it is not our goal. By constantly refining both models, TMC and FHI hope to nourish each model to be loved by customers all over the world for a long time to come."

Subaru Gunma Main Plant, where minicars were previously manufactured, was recently renewed for the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 production. FHI plans to produce the Impreza at the same plant by March 2013." [Read more]

New Toyota-Subaru coupe stars at Edmonton show

"The combined efforts of Toyota and Subaru have produced an exciting sporty car for Canadian buyers.
When the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S go on sale this year, they will feature a rear-wheel-drive Subaru mechanical foundation and Toyota styling. The combination promises a good-looking coupe with strong performance from a 200-horsepower Subaru boxer-four engine.

The coupe gives a boost to both Subaru and Scion, but especially to Subaru, which has had only sedan and wagon styling in its lineup for years. The car is available with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

This new coupe was one of a number of coupes, including the Hyundai Genesis, and sporty cars appearing at the Edmonton Motor-show. Although the Subaru drivetrain should provide solid performance in the BRZ, there were other cars on display that offer more horsepower, from the Canadian-built, mid-engine HTT Plethore super car to Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

At the same time, there were many vehicles that offer buyers the combination of utility and good fuel economy. Many of the displays reflected the up-to-date nature of the show.
Bob Vilas, executive director of the Edmonton Motor Dealers Association which presents the show, said the show includes 19 2013 models among the 2012 units on display. Technology plays a major role in many of the new vehicles.

"What makes a difference for consumers is that technology that was exclusive to luxury cars now is going into a wide range of vehicles," Vilas said.

Those technologies will handle tasks such as watching the blind spot on multi-lane streets or vibrating the steering wheel to wake up the driver if he should happen to fall asleep, Vilas said.

During the press preview on Feb. 29, many vehicles were still covered in plastic and manufacturers' displays were a work in progress. The Ford exhibit, where the 2013 Escape and 2013 Fusion were unveiled, was an exception, with everything ready to go when the media arrived." [Read more]

Subaru top maker in Consumer Reports ratings

Confetti flies as the introduction of the new 2010 Subaru Legacy rolls off the assembly line in 2009.
"Driven by what Consumer Reports called "wave of impressive redesigned models in the last few years," Subaru earned the top score overall in the magazine's report cards for 2012 for 13 major automakers.

The report cards - in the April issue due on sale March 6 - are based on performance, comfort, utility and reliability in the magazine's testing and consumer survey.

Three Subaru models are manufactured at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. plant in Lafayette: the Outback, Legacy and Tribeca. The plant also builds the Camry model for Toyota.

It was Subaru's first CR win ever with a brand score of 75, up two from last year. Subaru and another smaller maker, Mazda with a No. 2 finish, beat perennial winners - and much bigger companies - such as Honda and Toyota.

Consumer Reports praised the redesigned Legacy and Outback, and particularly the just redone 2012 Impreza, which is now CR's top pick in the small-sedan class. The Subaru brand's average road-test score of 82 is the highest in CR's analysis.

Honda, winner for the past four years, slipped to fourth among the 13 makers, behind Mazda and Toyota. CR said it suffered from "several redesigned models - including the Civic and Odyssey- that didn't measure up to their predecessors."

Toyota was among the top three for a fifth straight year, buoyed by consistently above-average reliability and high test scores, and had the most winning models in individual vehicle categories.

But CR's warned the Japanese makers to watch their rear-view mirrors. "While Japanese automakers still hold the top five spots, their lead is shrinking. In some of Honda's and Toyota's recently redesigned models, cost-cutting has become more noticeable," said David Champion, senior director of CR's Automotive Test Center." [Read more]

Subaru Launches FirstCarStory.com Allowing Car Lovers to Share Their First Car Experiences Through Animated Storytelling

"Subaru of America, Inc. announced the launch of its First Car Story campaign supporting the all-new 2012 Subaru Impreza. The campaign hub, FirstCarStory.com, features a groundbreaking animation generator that allows users to recreate their first car, tell their story, and see it turned into an animated video, which they can also set to music and narrate with their own voice.  Through Facebook, Twitter, or email, users can share their video with family and friends throughout their social network.

"Everyone loved their first car, no matter how bad, beat up, or borrowed. That first car became a new chapter in life or a ticket to freedom and first car stories are often the most memorable stories we have," said Alan Bethke, director, marketing communications, Subaru of America.  "The First Car Story campaign provides a creative outlet for reliving those unique, funny, unforgettable car experiences anyone who had a first car can relate to."

First Car Experience

Using pioneering text-to-video technology, FirstCarStory.com turns words and phrases into custom animations.  The experience begins when the user lands on the home page, where they find the car generator; this allows users to create their beloved first car right down to the degree of damage the car may have incurred.  Next the user cruises over to the story entry page to tell their story through text.  The animation generator tool isolates key words to begin populating visuals that bring the story to life.  Users can also select key words and phrases to highlight in their story.

The storyteller can then take the driver's seat and record a personal, vocal narrative to accompany the animation.  Before publishing, the storyteller selects an appropriate soundtrack to complete the personalization of their video.

With this unique social experience, the storyteller is able to tag Facebook friends to include in the video.  Once completed, the storyteller then can share and publish their directorial debut across social media platforms.  The storyteller user community can even see how their stories share common elements with other stories." Subaru drive nets Meals on Wheels $10,000

"A collaboration between Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, Simmons-Rockwell Subaru and Subaru owners across the region ended this week with a $10,000 grant awarded to Meals on Wheels.

It was part of the national "Share the Love" event, which fostered partnerships between local Meals on Wheels programs and Subaru dealerships.

Share the Love ran from Nov. 19 to Jan. 3. Subaru donated $250 for every new Subaru sold or leased during that period to the customer's choice of one of five charities, including Meals on Wheels.

The grants from Meals on Wheels Association of America ranged from $250 to $35,000.

On Wednesday, Meals on Wheels Executive Director Darlene Ike announced that the local program was awarded $10,000.

The award exceeded expectations at Simmons-Rockwell and Meals on Wheels, she said, adding, "It was beyond our wildest dreams."

Throughout December, Subaru owners and Simmons-Rockwell employees delivered meals across the region.

"Together, we have demonstrated to our community the level of commitment that Meals On Wheels of Chemung County, Subaru, the employees, families and customer base of Simmons-Rockwell Subaru all have, to keep our program and services going strong" Ike said." [Read more]

Subaru at Home in the City and in the Wild

Handout
"The XV Concept is a fun urban crossover that Subaru says will elevate driving enjoyment to new levels. The concept behind the new XV design is a cross between the “traditionally adventurous face of Subaru” and the urban lifestyle associated with the crossover genre, more typically known as an “urban adventure” vehicle.

Although Subaru says the XV Concept is adventure-capable in the wilderness, drivers will feel at home in the city as this concept vehicle was designed to easily cruise through city streets, making steep inclines, cobblestone lanes and daily city life just a little bit more interesting to explore. With sightlines higher than those of average passenger cars, familiar neighbourhoods will seem new again and even ordinary errands are more exciting from behind the wheel, says Subaru." [Read more]

40 Years of Grip: Subaru Celebrates Birthday of its All-Wheel Drive System

Chassis 2
"Aside from a growing portfolio of updated and new models (like the BRZ), Subaru has one other thing to celebrate this year: The 40th birthday of its highly venerated all-wheel drive system.

Back in 1972 in Japan, parent company Fuji Heavy Industries introduced its first passenger vehicle equipped with all-wheel drive. Little did it know that four decades later, the system employed by the Leone Estate Van 4WD would largely define the Subaru brand and the majority of its models. All-wheel drive back then was a rudimentary technology. But even so, it was highly effective in providing much needed traction in a variety of environments and climates. Together with Subaru's now-iconic flat-type engines, all-wheel drive dramatically improved grip in performance situations as well.

Fast forward 40 years and some 11.8 million (11,782,812 units as of January 31,2012, to be precise) all-wheel drive-equipped Subarus have rolled off its many production lines around the globe. Naturally, the drivetrain has evolved over the years and is now called Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive." [Read more]

"The award comes on the heels of strong sales results from Subaru.  The brand set a sales record in 2011 and has started 2012 with sales up 21% over the previous year.

"It is an honor to receive the award for best compact car from MotorWeek," Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. Preview: 2013 Subaru BRZ

Preview: 2013 Subaru BRZ car previews
"It all started in 2007 with a group of rogue Subaru engineers in their version of a ‘skunk works’ department. They wanted to see how a Subaru with a very low centre of gravity would perform.  A test mule based on a shortened legacy chassis was created and the engine was dropped as low as it could go.  Impressed with their progress, the engineering team invited executives from both Subaru and recent investor Toyota to see how this RWD concept drove.  Although initially tentative, a second mule was created from an Impreza platform and spy shots began to show up on the internet like it was Lindsay Lohan fresh off a bender.  History was made and one of the longest and most hyped vehicle developments began.
If automobiles are anything more than a passing interest to you, you have surely heard of the Subaru BRZ by now; maybe not with that name specifically, but perhaps as the Scion FR-S, Toyota GT 86, Toyota FT-86 or Toyobaru.  The name BRZ stands for Boxer (as in the engine configuration), Rear-wheel drive and Zenith (as in the height of achievement) and there you have the idea behind this car.  Subaru feels this car new also fits in with their current “Confidence in Motion” marketing campaign as it is a back to basics sports car. Specs and numbers were never the main focus for this car; intuitive driving feel was the goal." [Read more]
