2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year Contender: Subaru Impreza

2012-Subaru-Impreza

"Though the new 2012 Subaru Impreza’s sheetmetal is much easier on the eyes than the outgoing model, it’s no more handsome than that of big siblings the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon. Subaru throws in an interior that looks and feels even cheaper than the new Civic’s, especially in our lower-spec hatchback tester.

The Impreza lost 164 pounds, and a new 2.0-liter DOHC boxer has replaced its 2.5-liter SOHC boxer. The five-speed manual remains, though a continuously variable transmission has replaced its four-speed automatic. The car gets up to 36 mpg highway for the CVT, even with the standard all-wheel drive. Problem is, Subaru’s CVT feels like the power-sapper it is, needing 1.4 more seconds to reach 60 mph than the manual."
